Something kinda oops
We’re not the sort of people to say ‘told you so’ (yeah, right!) but we can’t say we’re surprised to hear Girls Aloud have postponed their Newnham Park show.
Apparently, organisers Edge Promotions have issues with safety and finding enough support bands to fill the day - not to mention, one imagines, the small matter of flogging some 15,000 tickets for the bally thing.
Let’s be honest, the shindig seemed ill-conceived from the off. Indeed, regular readers will remember we expressed scepticism about the event in March.
Tickets (a snip at £30 - the same price as a ticket to see Prince in London) were available from bizarre places like Digital Knights in Plymouth and the Ayres Sport & Leisurewear store in Tavistock.
And the proposed line-up was equally bonkers - with popstars Girls Aloud, Booty Luv and Eton Road mixing it up with the dadrockin’ likes of Boogie Nights, Joey The Lips and Karrallon. We’ve heard of ’something for everyone’ but that’s
just ridiculous.
Nevertheless, we’re assured the concert has been rescheduled for August 11. Whether Girls Aloud will bother to turn up remains to be seen.

Environment info day
To celebrate the start of Recycle Now Week - which kicks into action after half term, on June 2 - and includes World Environment Day (June 5), the Plymouth Environment Centre is holding an information day at St Matthias Church Hall (on the corner of Bedford Park and Clifton Place) North Hill, Plymouth on Saturday, from 11am to 4pm.
Of course there will be freebies for you to pick up, included low-engergy light bulbs - but there will be more besides - vegan food, childrens activities, film shows, live music, story-telling, and maybe a puppet show.
They say: ‘Come along for a jolly day out, celebrate world environment day, find out about climate change and recycling and what you can do, eat some food and make new friends.’
We say: ‘What they just said.’

Natural events
Half term, and what are you going to do? You could do worse than check out the Torbay Coast and Country Trust for events.
There’s today’s hedgerows and meadows insect thing at Cockington, tomorrow’s activities and games at Berry Head, Thursday’s magical moth lamp thing (although it is quite late, but what the hey, it’s not a school night). Or Friday’s boat building shenanigans at Goodrington Sands.
Or you could just turn up at one of the trust’s centres and gabber on about organic food or carbon neutral protection of the environment and habitats. Hey, you might even learn something.
For more details of what this charitable trust has to offer, shoot through to the website.

Special offer
If you’ve had enough of paper tigers - all mouth, no trousers - then big up your environmental credentials with elephants’ paper. Ok, to be more precise, paper made from elephant poo. Check out the site and find out what’s it all about (and spare a thought for those who collect the poo).
For orders under £15, you get a sample pack of 15 sheets of A4 100% ‘inclusion’ papers (straw, grass, tea, coffee, bank note, stamp, elephant dung, confetti, etc, etc).
For orders over £15.00, you get an Ellie Poo A6 notebook.
Just use the promotional code DEVON when you order. Offer ends August 31, 2007.

Free time
It’s the 50th anniversary of the Free Cinema movement and to celebrate, D+CFilm, in association with your friendly neighbourhood PRSD, has launched a new competition encouraging local lensers to pick up a camera and document life as it is today.
Free Cinema saw UK filmmakers like Lindsay Anderson making documentary films outside the framework of the film industry. The movies all had a very low budget and featured ordinary, mostly working-class people at work and play.
The best short documentary films submitted to the D+CFree competition will scoop some fantastic prizes and be shown in cinemas around Devon and Cornwall for free.
Flip over to D+CFilm for more information.

Hot, hot, hot night
Brush off your Burlesque brassiere and head to the Lemongrove tonight for the Hot Bitches Party.
What the?! Oh yes, all the bands are female fronted from far and wide and your home stomping ground. The hot, hip and happening honies will be leading , , , Koogaphone and more.
Plus the Fleabag Family Circus will be performing - now that really is hot, along with the slippery shenanigans of a pole dancer.
Plus the comedic comparing of Jackie Juno.

Tide over
Don’t make waves. Not here in the south west, anyway. The latest Energy White Paper doesn’t go far enough in offering financial support to offshore renewables or renewable heat. The bottom line is continued uncertainty over the financial viability of wave power in the south west - there’s enough sea, ain’t there? There’s the Wave Hub project just of Cornwall, ain’t there?
Wave device developers should set sail for Scotland and Portugal, where they’ll be offered more mullah for their musings.
Let’s leave the final word on the white paper to Matthew Spencer, chief exec of Regen SW:” A far reaching sustainable energy strategy has been agreed by the UK at a European level, but this paper does not consider how we are to meet its goals. Unfortunately it looks like we will need another energy review before government can answer the question of how we are going to deliver 20% of the UK’s energy from renewables.”
