That’s a wrap
Just cos your PRSD T-shirt doesn’t arrive in a polystyrene box, there’s no reason to think the other stuff you order online will be packaged in the same way.
The boom in internet shopping has led to a huge increase in the amount of expanded polystyrene households are chucking away.
Unfortunately, there’s a big misconception among citizens that polystyrene can’t be recycled - understandable considering there’s no scheme in place with Devon County Council.
But polystyrene can be recycled and remade into a bunch of useful items, like rulers, egg cartons, thermal insulation and desk trays.
Simon Taylor, managing director of Mil-tek Direct is urging Devon County Council to put a polystyrene recycling programme in place.
He told PRSD: “People are becoming more and more environmentally aware and it’s important that local authorities give everyone the opportunity to recycle as much waste as they can.
“Currently, all household polystyrene waste in Devon is sent to landfill and this needs to be changed. Many businesses that get through a lot of polystyrene are recycling their waste polystyrene and it’s time the general public started doing it too.”
